چکیده
Adjustment disorder is not a new diagnostic category. It was incorporated into DSM-III in 1980 (American Psychiatric Association 1980) and into ICD-9 in 1978 (World Health Organization 1978), having been called transient situational dis turbance in earlier editions. It represents a maladaptive but temporary reaction to life stressors. There are no detailed diagnostic criteria in either DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association 2000) or ICD-10 (World Health Organization 1992); the main clinical features described in those publications are summarised in Box 1. Adjustment disorder differs from other diagnoses in which life events are a common factor. For example, an event or stressor is not essential for a diagnosis of depressive episode, whereas it is a prerequisite for a diagnosis of adjustment disorder. Apart from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder, adjustment disorder is the only other diagnosis based on aetiology in the current classifications. In ICD-10, adjustment disorder is classified under ‘Neurotic, stressrelated and somatoform disorders’ (code F43.2), unlike DSM-IV-TR where is it is not classified under any particular group. Adjustment disorder: implications for ICD-11 and DSM-5.
Adjustment disorder has been a recognised disorder for decades but has been the subject of little epidemiological research. Now researchers have identified the prevalence of adjustment disorder in primary care, and found general practitioner recognition very low but with high rates of antidepressant prescribing. Possible reasons for the seemingly low prevalence, recognition rate and inappropria...

METHODS Using a two stage screening method, those above a threshold score for possible caseness on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), were interviewed using SCAN to identify those with depressive episode and AD. Bivariately, threat/harm and loss exposure dimensions were related to each other but differentially related to relationship adjustment and PTSD symptoms. Results from structural equatio...
متن کاملAdjustment disorder with depressed mood: a critique of its DSM-IV and ICD-10 conceptualisations and recommendations for the future.
BACKGROUND The volume of research involving adjustment disorder (AD) is limited. The scientific neglect of AD seems to result from the inadequate operationalisation of AD in DSM-IV and ICD-10. The aims of the present proposal are to discuss the shortcomings of AD conceptualisations and to present recommendations for the future. SAMPLING AND METHODS This conceptual paper is based on an iterati...
